Update on the pacifier

Remember how I said I wanted to get rid of the pacifier to end the "sucking to sleep" association? I think things just got worse! Here is the journey of the pacifier: new baby = would take it to sleep, could pop it in his mouth if he was starting to wake up and he would go back to sleep; 3-4 months old = would take it for naps but not in the nighttime, would only take it after he had nursed for a minute or two; now = won't even take it after he nurses, will still take it during the day.

What we should know is that I decided to drop the whole "get rid of the pacifier" crusade and let it be for now. We just took the swaddle away about 2 weeks ago (when I discovered he roll to his side while he was in it. Didn't want him landing on his face and not able to push himself up) so getting rid of both at the same time seemed a little extreme. But, alas, now he won't take it at all at night. Ahhh! I just became the human pacifier!

  1. darn it! I'll cross my fingers for you. Harper has always preferred the real thing to the pacifier! I wish I had some great advice for you, but alas, we're working through similar things here as well. Good luck!

  2. Steph: This is the "pull off" I'm starting to use on Hyrum. It's from Pantley's No-cry sleep solution. It basically took me 20 times tonight before it worked but hey, maybe in the middle of the night or tomorrow it will only take 19 :)

    Pantley's Gentle Removal Plan

Baby is awake and nursing vigorously.
Baby's eyes close, and his sucking rake slows.
    You gently remove your nipple.
Baby roots (moving his mouth toward you).
You try holding his chin, but he'll have none of that!
You put him back to the breast.
Count: one thousand, two thousand...ten thousand [or whatever it takes until he starts comfort nursing again]
    You gently remove your nipple.
    Baby roots.
You try stalling, but no dice.
You put him back to the breast.
Count: one thousand, two thousand,...ten thousand.
    You gently remove your nipple.
    Baby roots.
You put him back to the breast.
Count: one thousand, two thousand,...ten thousand.
    You gently remove your nipple.
    Baby roots.
You put him back to the breast.
Count: one thousand, two thousand...ten thousand.
    You gently remove your nipple.
Baby moves a little, and you gently hold his mouth closed.
Baby doesn't resist; he is nearly out.
    You place Baby in bed.
    He goes to sleep.

  3. I'm trying the no-cry sleep solution method as well, and I've also given up on banning the binky. It just works so well ... but alas, has to be replaced about ten times before he really settles into sleep for the night. I wish we would have talked more about parenting while in the same quad (or country! :) )I feel like we have a lot of parenting ideas in common.
